People who suffer from chronic pain are always in search of relief. But Hannah Shewan Stevens found a unique solution for her pain.

Are orgasms the unique new treatment for chronic pain?

Those who deal with chronic pain can sing stories about the various pills, treatments, and herbal supplements they’ve taken to try and combat it. Physical therapy, opioids, vitamin injections, essential oils: no matter what you name, someone has most likely tried it to help relieve their pain.

Who knew sexual health could end up benefiting your overall physical health? Freelance journalist Hannah Shewan Stevens is sharing her secret to dealing with the pain of her fibromyalgia diagnosis: daily orgasms.

Twelve years of pain

Stevens’s chronic pain story started when she was fourteen. One day, a mild, dull ache climbed up her spine and never left. Over the years, the pain progressively got worse and reached a paralyzing high. Every day was a struggle for Stevens as she tried to find relief wherever she could.

As Stevens explained in The Sun, “In the beginning, I spent many hours in GP offices trying to get dismissive doctors to take the symptoms seriously, which felt like I was fighting a grumpy gatekeeper protecting the health system from potential time wasters.”

Relying on opioids, in the beginning, Stevens spent her university years curled up in pain  and even “visited A&E five times in three months.” It took Stevens until she was twenty-one to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia after several misdiagnoses.

Desperate for answers

While having a formal diagnosis was nice, Stevens was still struggling with the pain. After taking nearly every combination of opioids in existence, Stevens was losing hope she’d ever find relief for her pain. “When the side effects of the medication became unbearable, I went cold turkey and decided to just white knuckle it through the pain,” she shared with The Sun.

When Stevens moved to London in 2015, she gave up on her pain medication cold turkey and needed relief. But when she went back to the doctors, Stevens was blindsided by the way she was treated. “The consultant I saw, who was also in charge of the unit, dismissed my concerns immediately, threatened to put ‘drug-seeking behaviour’ on my medical records and insisted that I should just quit my job if life was so hard.”

Giving up doctors, Stevens turned to mindfulness & meditation to help relieve her pain. It took until 2019, but Stevens finally found relief for her pain — by complete accident.

Sex turns into pain relief

As Stevens tells the story, “While fooling around with an ex partner, I had an explosive orgasm that extinguished the pain for the first time in five years. Painlessness was such an alien feeling that it took several minutes to realize that it was actually happening. That sensation of normalcy was better than any orgasm I’d ever had.”

Spending the weekend on a sexual journey, Stevens found what kinds of orgasms give her pain relief. While orgasms weren’t a cure, Stevens found how they could give daily relief. “I experimented further and realized that beginning and ending the day with an orgasm made my average pain levels for the day lower.”

Having spent the past nine months using this method of pain relief, Stevens knows her body better than ever before. Of course, Stevens isn’t just using orgasms as her lone pain relief treatment. “Coupled with regular physiotherapy, structured exercise and mindfulness techniques, I can manage fibromyalgia more effectively and my mental health has improved significantly.”

If you’re looking for help with your chronic pain issues, Stevens has nothing but great things to say about using orgasms for pain relief. “Utilising orgasms to manage fibromyalgia has reinvigorated my life and I feel more at home in my body than ever before.”
