Fitness model Eliza Watson discusses the importance of mental health
The sensational fitness model Eliza Watson, opens up about the importance of mental health and how fitness can have a positive affect on that. Eliza strongly believes that mental health is just as important as physical health and she has been on a personal journey herself, in order to see a different perspective of things.
When the British fitness lover was 25 and studying at university, she volunteered as a mental health worker in impoverished areas of Sri Lanka for some months. She explains, “It was a groundbreaking experience for me. Even though there was a language barrier, I was still able to connect people and help improve their mental health through activities such as dancing and crafting.”
Even though fitness modelling may sound like a glamorous lifestyle, it still has its cons. Eliza explains that “You should always disconnect yourself from your photos. Sometimes you might do photoshoots and you will think that you would need to lose weight or put on weight, but the truth is that it is just the lighting and angles.”
“You should never compare yourself to your photos or to other people’s photos. You should just love every part of your body, no matter what.”
Eliza got into fitness after being inspired by a coach she met. She had researched fitness for years and has made huge progress from it. She believes that when you get into fitness and you see it as a passion, it can most definitely benefit your mental health.
She now feels stronger, confident, happy and she loves to spread the message of body positivity through her creative photo shoots.
High intensity workouts especially can enhance your mental health, because when you are working out, your brain releases a chemical which is called endorphins. If you become a regular runner, you will feel the ‘runner’s high’ because when you are running for a long distance, your brain is flooded with endorphins and your body is truly in a state of relaxation. You can maximize the mental health benefits of working out by seeking professional therapy. The licensed counselors at BetterHelp can help you develop self-efficacy and reach your fitness goals.
However, Eliza advises that “you should always seek a professional trainer when you want to start getting into fitness properly. Do not go into the mindset of just ‘eating healthily and working out everyday’ because it is not right.”
“We all are different heights, have different weights and are of different ages, so you need to seek a professional to help plan out your meals and help guide you through the correct workout routines.”
Another important factor that Eliza believes in, is to avoid diet fads. From first hand experience, she has realized that they are not sustainable at all and can affect your mental and physical health.
She believes that in order to truly feel positive and uplift your mental health, you need to not be scared of carbohydrates because they give you energy and instead have a positive relationship with food, since it is the fuel for your body. Eliza also advises that “you should allow your body to rest, because working out everyday is counter productive.”
Eliza has a degree in nutrition and psychology and truly understands the effect of bad mental health. She has also had experience and from that experience she is truly passionate about helping people. She strongly believes that anyone at any age can get into fitness and she strongly stands for them to do so, because they will end up seeing positive results just like she did.
Fitness can also challenge you, which is just what you might need in your life. When you are motivated to do something, this can increase your mental simulation and make you want to work hard, especially when you see what you have achieved.
Eliza has done this, by participating in tough mudder events, in order to give herself a certain mindset and push herself to train harder, in order to understand the meaning of endurance.
She has also stated that “If you want to get into fitness modelling, try to connect with photographers first through social media and once you see that you feel confident when doing photo shoots, you would also be proud of your achievements and want to share it with the world. It is great to spread body positivity, because it can inspire others.”
