The negative effects of adopting a poor lifestyle on your education

Education is undoubtedly among the most sought-after assets that every person should aspire to attain. Education can be defined as nurturing skills and receiving knowledge on various topics in an institution of learning. The benefits of achieving a high level of education are universal because it is a fundamental human right in most countries. 

To be able to enjoy the benefits of quality education, students often require a favorable environment. As such, for learning to occur in any environment, some factors have to be considered to ensure a successful learning experience. However, some elements may be in the way of students’ dream of academic excellence and gaining the skills to succeed in life. Some of the factors that may hinder a student’s ability to learn include:

  • A student’s mental capacity
  • Complex subjects
  • Social and economic factors
  • Poor mental and physical health
  • General disinterest in learning
  • Poor student-teacher interaction
  • The teacher’s negative attitude towards students
  • Distracting learning environment

This article will focus on the effects of adopting an unhealthy lifestyle on your education. An unhealthy lifestyle is defined as an individual choice to participate in activities that are likely to impact your health negatively. Below are some instances that can be considered unhealthy lifestyle choices. They include:

  • Eating unhealthy foods
  • Going for long hours between meals
  • Gluttony (often lead to obesity)
  • Lack of enough sleep
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Drug abuse and cigarette smoking
  • Overlooking the importance of exercise routines

These are just some instances where individuals engage in unhealthy habits. Unfortunately, these factors are more common in college and university students. An excellent example of unhealthy lifestyle choices is binge drinking and indulging in drugs. This often leaves students with a hangover the following day, translating to reduced focus in class or missing it altogether. In the long run, the student’s grades will suffer. 

Students often rely on quick-fixes such as taking coffee, energy drinks, etc., to nurse the hangover.  However, research has proved that they do more harm than good to your health. For instance, taking energy drinks is linked to liver damage and increased heart rate. When diagnosed with such conditions, your treatment will undoubtedly interfere with your learning schedule. They require you to spend more time in the hospital to manage the symptoms and seek treatment. Thus, it is likely to enhance your desire to ask the question, “Who can do my homework for money?”

On the other hand, students often opt for readily available foods or are easy to prepare. This includes some processed foods, snacks, fast foods, carbonated drinks, among many others. Understandably, such foods might seem like a quick and easy solution, especially when working to meet a deadline or reading for an upcoming exam. They do not realize that such foods often lack nutritional value. If consumed in large amounts, they often have adverse effects on your health. 

Unfortunately, these foods often contain high amounts of sodium, trans fats, saturated fats, and preservatives, among many other ingredients detrimental to your health, despite being easy to prepare. However, this problem can be alleviated simply by including essential fats, protein, fruits, carbohydrates, and other balanced diet components into meals. Despite its health benefits, students view this as a time consuming and taxing process to follow through.

Reasons why students should not adopt unhealthy habits

Adopting an unhealthy lifestyle as a student often leads to a wide array of health problems and, in extreme cases, even death, especially as you grow older. However, the immediate effects of indulging in an unhealthy lifestyle as a student often impact your ability to learn new concepts and develop a wide array of skills. Below are some of the effects of negative lifestyle choices that could affect your course of learning. They include:

A decline in students’ academic performance

Unhealthy habits common among students, such as drug use and excessive alcohol consumption, often leave students hungover and exhausted. As such, students will spend more time recovering from drinking sprees than attending classes. Besides, alcohol consumption is known to deplete brain cells. Therefore, it is reasonable that grades will fall.


0besity is a common health issue that affects countless students worldwide. For instance, obese students have lower self-esteem, which results in their reduced motivation to learn.

Poor health interferes with regular learning schedules

Poor lifestyle choices often lead to deteriorating health and, eventually, the onset of illnesses. Therefore, you will likely spend a lot of time in hospital seeking medication and forego learning for an indefinite amount of time.

Reduced mental capacity

Research has shown that unhealthy foods contribute to lower cognitive abilities. Such foods negatively impact your behavior, mood, and mental health. This will result in reduced attention span and lower memory retention capacity.

As you can see, unhealthy habits affect your ability to learn in more ways than one.  Therefore, teaching institutions, parents, and students should take an active role in ensuring they put in instilling healthy habits for a prosperous future.
