After Justin Hartley filed for divorce, how did his wife take it? Discover the shocking details behind how Chrishell Stause found out.

What exactly did Justin Hartley’s wife think about their shocking divorce?

In the middle of filming Selling Sunset, Justin Hartley sent a text that changed the show’s course. He sent his then-wife Chrishell Stause a text saying “we are filed” and, according to Stause, “Forty-five minutes later, the world knew.”

Stause claimed the divorce blindsided her, but did it really? What exactly was the nature of Hartley’s and her relationship? A happy marriage doesn’t just implode without a heat source. With only her account to go on, these are her thoughts on the shocking divorce in a turbulent year.

Reasons for divorce

Hartley filed for divorce last November, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. Stause, on the other hand, claims she still doesn’t know what those differences are. On Selling Sunset, Stause recounted “Because of the crazy way in which this went down, people want answers, and I want  f—king answers.”

According to a source for E!, the couple had been fighting for months before Hartley ended the relationship in November, but they always swept things under the rug. The only thing is she never thought he would ever go through with it.

In her response to the text, she claimed, “I talked to him right after ‘cause I thought that must be a joke, but that was kind of the end of the communication.”

Wildfire news

Stause wasn’t even the one to tell the cast of Selling Sunset. Like everyone else, they found out through a TMZ news alert. It also shocked those close to the couple. A source for Entertainment Tonight reported that “The couple has always been incredible, with no signs of things being on the rocks. Friends are speculating this was an impulse on Justin’s side due to something that happened.”

In the immediate aftermath of the divorce news, Stause was devastated by Hartley’s decision. She confessed to her Selling Sunset costar Mary Fitzgerald, “‘How could you do it this way?’ And then the sadness, like, ‘I love him so much. This was my best friend.’”

Opinions on the divorce spread quickly among the cast; some were supportive, like Heather Rae Young, who told Us Weekly, “I’m mainly just giving her space. Tarek [El Moussa] and I sent her flowers wishing her well, and I told her I’m here for her.”

Others remained neutral; in the Selling Sunset season 3 finale, Davina Potratz quipped, “There are two sides of every story.” Stause and everyone else who watched this episode thought Potratz was taking Hartley’s side – but Portratz cleared the air by claiming she supports Stause, but wants to hear the other side, too.

Stause’s comments now

Selling Sunset season 3 was released on Netflix on Aug. 7th. Before the premiere, Stause told Us Weekly, “It’s an embarrassing, humiliating type of thing to go through without cameras and without people judging you, so I just hope people are gentle when they watch.” She wasn’t too thrilled with how much the divorce took over season 3, but ultimately it wasn’t Stause’s decision.

Stause hasn’t commented publicly, but she liked a tweet theorizing Hartley cheated on her with his now-girlfriend Sofia Pernas while filming on separate projects in Canada.

According to a source for E!, “Chrishell is heartbroken that he has moved on so quickly.” The source added, “It doesn’t do her any good to dwell on the possibilities of Justin cheating and is trying to move on.” This anonymous person also debunked the rumors of cheating, emphasizing, “Cheating was never in the cards and never happened on either side.”

Stause’s dating life

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Stause mentioned she’s working towards moving on from Hartley and even reported about her romantic future. Stause said it was a “nice surprise” to see potential suitors sliding into her DMs on Instagram, but “I’m not going to tell you who.” She isn’t actively dating yet, though: “I’m completely single, and because of COVID, I haven’t done much mingling.”

Stause claims she’s “in a really positive space”, moving past all the drama on Selling Sunset and unfazed by other cast members speaking about her romantic personal life publicly. “I mean, honestly, I don’t really care what [Christine Quinn] says anymore. I just don’t. I’m just so past her opinion and caring about it.”
