Has Melissa Benoist's ex husband admit to abusing her? See what 'Supergirl' star Benoist has to say and how fans are reacting.

Melissa Benoist’s ex-husband is finally admitting to being abusive

In Nov. 2019, Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) released a 14-minute video titled “Life isn’t always what it seems” on her Instagram account where she talked about being a survivor of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). While Benoist didn’t name any names for her abusive partner, the details that she gave in the video and the timeline laid out made pretty much everyone suspect her ex-husband Blake Jenner.

At the end of her video, Benoist said, “I choose to love. I don’t choose to minimize my life out of fear. I choose to love myself to know that love does not include violence, and to let victims know that there is a way out in which you will be protected.“ Since then, Benoist has shared various resources for IPV and has been praised for her openness and candor from fellow actors and creatives alike.

Since then, she and her husband Chris Wood have welcomed their first child, a son named Huxley. Currently, Benoist is shooting the sixth & final season of her long-running series, Supergirl. Jenner, meanwhile, has finally released a statement about Benoist’s accusations. Here’s what you need to know.

“I take full responsibility”

Almost a year after Benoist posted the video, Jenner took to his own Instagram account and broke the silence. He said, “Throughout that time, I reflected on a period in my life that I had previously kept in the darkness out of shame and fear, but I know this is something that needs to be addressed, not just publicly, but also privately with the individual directly affected and with myself.”

Jenner took responsibility saying, “I take full responsibility and accountability for the hurt that I inflicted during my relationship with my past partner — emotionally, mentally and yes, physically.” He also said the incident, where he hit Benoist in the face with a phone was, “a moment that I will regret for the rest of my life. If I could do anything to take it back, I would.”

He went on to talk about the relationship without directly naming Benoist. Jenner’s own account said that it was one rooted in “co-dependency” and that there was “mental, emotional and physical abuse inflicted from both ends.” He added that the couple went through therapy to work through their relationship’s issues.

Jenner also went into detail about his time in therapy. While he did take blame for his part in the relationship, he also added, “I also do believe that when allegations and information are brought forth about someone, that accountability goes both ways and one has a right to defend oneself when deemed necessary.”

Jenner said this former partner, Benoist, also expressed jealousy with his various female co-stars as well. He added, “There are also discrepancies between the recollections of our relationship, its timeline and the things that took place over the years.” Jenner added that he did want this to “turn this into a she-said-he-said mudslinging match of sorts.”

He concluded with, “I can unequivocally say that I know who I am and know that I have grown and learned from the mistakes I have made throughout a long period of self-examination and work, but very much understand that I can always learn and continually grow. I hope that by me sharing my story, that it can help people, in some capacity, to reflect, listen, and emerge from the shame and secrecy of abuse.”

Benoist’s response

Benoist didn’t respond back to Jenner’s statement. Though fans of the actress took to social media with the hashtag, “I Stand With Melissa” saying that Jenner’s statement came across as victim blaming and was a continuation of the abuse from their relationship during that time.

The timing also played a role in people’s suspicions as Benoist has, again, recently given birth and is preparing to end her successful CW series after a six-season run. Benoist, instead, seems to be focusing most of her efforts toward the upcoming Presidential Election, where she is encouraging people to register to vote and, well, actually go out and vote.
