Done with ‘Money Heist’ season 4? All you need to know about part 5

Because of the way the world works now, bingewatching a show that used to take a week can be done in approximately 36 hours. We’re still not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing, but it has given us time to catch up on Netflix’s La Casa de Papel (or Money Heist). The fourth season just premiered on April 3, but we’ve finished that already and are eagerly waiting for the fifth season to drop.

It turns out, we might have a while to wait.

There’s no greenlight for Season 5 Money Heist (yet).

The show has not officially received the greenlight for season 5, but since it is one of the most popular shows on Netflix, with a global audience, it seems likely we can expect another chapter (eventually).

It is also crucial because the prior season ended on a major cliffhanger with a heist that constantly seems in peril of falling apart, and the gang was forced to improvise to give themselves a little bit more time.

The Spanish series, executive produced by Álex Pina, Sonia Martínez, Jesús Colmenar, Esther Martínez Lobato, and Nacho Manubens, works under the label of Vancouver Media with Atresmedia as the production company. It was initially intended to serve as a small, two-part series, but then Netflix acquired its copyright and it became a global sensation.

It kind of makes sense, since the first two seasons had a tighter narrative structure, while the past two chapters have included some bizarre storytelling choices (for example, killing off one of our favorite characters in a pointless, nonsensical death.)

COVID-19 is going to create some production troubles, for Money Heist and every series currently in production

Even though Season 5 feels like a guarantee, there are no official updates on when the series will go into production. COVID-19 can be blamed for the delay, along with the delay of every television series and movie that was slated to come out this year.

Producer Alex Pina has stated numerous times that there are plans for a fifth season, but social distancing and quarantining guidelines mean there are no definite dates listed yet. That means anything slated to start production in 2020 is rolled back to 2021, at the very least.

We can expect the return of some unsavory characters

The show frequently subverts expectations, but sometimes that is not as much fun to watch as it sounds.

For instance, our eternal fave Nairobi (Alba Flores) was killed off in Season 4, but somehow those garbage characters Gandia (José Manuel Poga) and Arturo (Enrique Arce) have lived to disappoint another day. Both were spared, despite Gandia killing Nairobi (why?! WHY?) and Arturo sexually assaulting a hostage during the heist during Season 1.

Nairobi, the beautiful, complicated, master criminal with the one working brain cell out of everyone involved in the heist was brutally murdered, yet the general director of the Royal Mint of Spain and everyone’s least favorite baby daddy continues to walk around on this earth.

Executive producer Jesús Colmenar detailed how Arturo works as a villain, and that love-to-hate appeal for the viewer. “He represents the meanness within all of us,” Colmenar said. “You recognize certain base passions of the viewers themselves in Arturo – and that’s why you can’t stand him.”

Sierra is also expected to make a comeback

Speaking of morally complicated characters, the woman we are both deeply intimidated by and attracted to, Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri), found the Professor’s hiding place by the end of the season.

It’s an interesting stalemate: Sierra completely has power over where the story goes next, but she’s also facing the threat of libel and defamation after that press conference where she revealed the coverup by the Spanish government.

If Sierra ends up on the team, though, it’s clear she deserves a double cut of the profits: one cut for her, and one cut for her baby.

Every news update on Money Heist stresses that this is one of the most highly regarded and watched shows currently streaming on Netflix. Season 5 feels inevitable, but global pandemics wait for no man.

  • Just finished season 2 of Money Heist. I’ll admit it was very good. Once I started season three to see the plot change to rescuing Rio, I said F that. If I took them two seasons to tell their bank robbery story, I physically don’t have enough hours in the day to care about Rios rescue.
