Celebrity sex scenes on TV and movies look like fun to fans. So why can't many celebrities bear to watch them?

Why so shy? Every celebrity who won’t watch their own sex scenes

As fans, we all watch transfixed as our favorite actors play out torrid love scenes on the screen – popcorn and cold drinks in hand. Yet for the celebrity watching their own sex scenes, it can be a torturous experience.

Sometimes celebrities have the tough job of stripping down and simulating sex for television shows or movies. Celebrity sex scenes are often very awkward to shoot and celebrities have no problem talking about it. Things are even more uncomfortable when props and stunts are involved. So how do they really feel about watching themselves, – or worse, have family members watch them – have simulated sex?

Ellen Pompeo

It was the one-night stand that resulted in so many tears, so many fights, and one broken arm. During Grey’s Anatomy‘s second season, George (T.R. Knight) finally got up the courage to tell Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) how he felt about her. Meredith was already upset about stuff with her father and she wasn’t great at dealing with her emotions, so, in the moment, she made the choice to sleep with her roommate.

During Variety‘s Women of Grey’s Anatomy panel, Pompeo and showrunner Krista Vernoff looked back on what it was like to work with series creator Shonda Rhimes at the start of the show, and that scene, in particular, came up. “Especially in the early days, as an actor, she would have these ideas and I would say, ‘That’s a terrible idea, I don’t like this, I don’t want to do this,’’ Pompeo recalled.

“And then it goes in the script anyways cause she’s Shonda, and then you have to do it cause she’s Shonda, and then it turns out to be the biggest thing of the show. . . She has this weird sixth sense to know what’s going to work and what isn’t. That’s a gift on some other level.” Pompeo then remarked, “I’ve still never watched it.”

Matthew McConaughey

Last week The Sydney Morning Herald’s Benjamin Law interviewed Matthew McConaughey. The Academy Award-winning actor is best known for his roles in the films Dallas Buyers Club and Interstellar, and the HBO series True Detective. He’s just released his memoir, Greenlights. During the interview, Law asked, “You’ve been acting for quite some time now. When it comes to sex scenes, are they still awkward?”

“Oh, they are awkward!” Celebrity McConaughey replied about doing sex scenes on camera, “Early on, you just have to look at the person you’re doing the scene with and go, ‘All right, let’s really laugh our butts off and admit this is awkward. And let’s be glad we’re not playing people who are shooting or killing people right now.”

“Because awkward things happen, man. I mean, you’re in a little skin-colored thing that’s barely covering what you’ve got. It moves and it slides. MacConaughey recounted laughing.” So you try to navigate through it, then, usually at the end, you laugh your ass off.”

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie did a celebrity sex scene in the Wolf of Wall Street and decided to lie about it to her parents. The lie evolved into a very weird thing when she realized they were going to see it. She told The Hollywood Reporter, “I just flat-out lied to my family for a really long time and I said, ‘I don’t care what you hear; there’s no nudity; I’m not doing any nudity. Ignore anything anyone’s saying; there’s no nudity.

“And then I thought, ‘The movie’s going to come out and they’re going to see that there’s nudity,’ so I changed that to, ‘It’s actually a body double and they just CGI’d my head onto someone else,’” Robbie recalled. “My family doesn’t have anything to do with the entertainment industry . . . and they were like, ‘They can do that? And I was like, ‘Oh, technology these days. You wouldn’t believe what they do in Hollywood!’”

Of course, Robbie had to eventually tell the truth about the sex scene. “And then eventually I came clean. ‘I’m doing nudity, but you should read the book first, and if you still want to see the movie after reading the book . . .’” she said.

Zac Efron

Zac Efron filmed a celebrity sex scene for the love story, The Lucky One. Being naturally supportive, his mother wanted to see the film.

“We saw the film together and I was kind of squirming,” Zac Efron told People. “Even though she was a couple of seats down from me, I tried to duck out during those scenes because it was too embarrassing. Obviously, I’m acting, but knowing that my mom and my family were watching is kind of awkward. There’s really no way around it.”

Allison Williams

Celebrity Allison Williams filmed multiple sex scenes for the HBO show Girls, so she couldn’t avoid having her famous father see them. Celebrity actor Jemima Kirke was with Allison Williams and her father, veteran newscaster Brian Williams, when they watched one of the show’s sex scenes together.

“I was so nervous,” revealed Kirke to New York magazine. “I don’t even know [Brian Williams], but can you imagine [with this]?! Watching a kissing scene with my dad next to me is awful, let alone with you getting — whatever that’s called — motorboated in your a**.”

Mila Kunis

During filming of the Black Swan, Mila Kunis filmed a sex scene in the drama with another celebrity, Natalie Portman. Her father couldn’t even get through the sex scene, although he tried.

“I feel sorry for my dad though,” Kunis explained to Parade. “If I’m not mistaken, he walked out during the sex scene in Black Swan. I just don’t think he wants to envision his daughter doing that kind of thing. I’m not sure if he’s going to be able to see Friends with Benefits. He’ll be leaving the theater a lot. I think I might have to ban him.”
