K-drama ‘She Was Pretty’ is based on a true story: All the reasons to watch

It only aired for a few months, but K-drama She Was Pretty is still on the minds and in the hearts of fans. The romantic comedy originally aired from September to November 2015, quickly drawing in thousands of fans. This twisted tale provides many comedic & touching moments that are sure to make it one of your favorites.

Based on a true story

The plot of She Was Pretty is based on a true story and centers around childhood friends Hye-Jin (Hwang Jung-eum) and Sung-Joon (Park Seo-joon) who are from different social groups meeting years later – with their roles reserved.

The conflict in She Was Pretty begins after fifteen years, when the beautiful rich Hye-Jin is now humbled in physical appearance & economic status, while her unattractive male counterpart Sung-Joon is now handsome & successful – causing her to avoid their reunion.

The tale of fearing a reunion with old friends is as old as time. Thousands of films & shows use the plot of characters wracked with nerves over school reunions and fearing comparison to old friends. Along with its comedy, the basis of the She Was Pretty makes it more relatable & enjoyable to viewers.

Meaningful lessons

The best part of She Was Pretty are the multiple lessons for viewers. The overarching theme of the series is to confront fears head-on rather than running from them. Previous beauty Hye-Jin is ashamed both of her new appearance and status in life, feeling she can’t face her newly attractive friend Sung-Joon. So Hye-Jin asks her friend to meet with Sung-Joon instead.

When Hye-Jin begins working as an intern at a magazine, she’s shocked when her main editor is Sung-Joon: the exact person she’d been avoiding. The lesson provided to viewers in She Was Pretty with this recurring conflict is that you can’t outrun your problems – they’ll continue to come back to haunt you.

Another important message shared by She Was Pretty is the importance of self-love. While entertaining to watch, many fans have noted the entire conflict in the show could be avoided if Hye-Jin simply had more confidence in herself. Hye-jin consistently tries to change her appearance in She Was Pretty. However, one of her coworkers begins to fall in love with her based solely on her personality & charisma – not looks.

Overall, She Was Pretty is meaningful & entertaining, a great watch for anyone looking for a romantic series with a great message.
