Want to stream Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ 2020? All the places to tune in
Stephen King has proved himself to be one of America’s greatest national treasures. From Stand By Me to The Shawshank Redemption, he has given us some of the greatest contemporary stories ever told. King can’t be stopped, and is writing some of his greatest work today in between novels on his snarky twitter. Filmmakers continue to reimagine his works, and the latest example is The Stand 2020.
Gen X and other ancient generations may remember the original adaptation of King’s 1,152 page novel, the polarizing 1994 mini-series, back when it was called a four part made-for-TV movie. The Stand 2020 will also take the route of the small screen, and there are a few ways to watch all over the world.
Reboots of King’s stories have been known to reach great success as we’ve seen with It & It Chapter Two, as well as flop critically like 2019’s Pet Sematary. So where will The Stand 2020 end up?
The Stand 2020 tells the story of a pandemic (oh, great!), and how it affects a group of characters, flashing back in time from when they struggle with it to the future it creates. The virus isn’t the only spookiness King springs on us, and we can thankfully fear something other than a worldwide illness when we watch the series.
The prophet Mother Abigail (Whoopie Goldberg) warns the cast of familiar faces like James Marsden & Odessa Young of evil afoot. She tells them to beware the Dark Man, King’s recurring baddie Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård), a being of great power with sinister intentions. The Stand 2020 gives us a tale of both the plague of man, and of good & evil, and we have to watch to see who wins.
Where to watch
There are a few ways to watch The Stand 2020, but the easiest in the U.S. & Canada is through the CBS All Access application. The app costs $5.99 USD a month for a standard subscription, and runs $9.99 USD a month for those who can’t bear to watch another “together at home” holiday commercial.
CBS All Access streams certain content exclusively, and sniffing out other options may prove frustrating. Jordan Peele’s reimagining of The Twilight Zone ran only through CBS All Access, and fans became pigeon-holed to sign up to indulge in the Black Mirror-esque glory of the series. The Stand 2020 is no different, but one can binge the whole series free with the seven-day trial the platform offers upon registration.
International streaming options
International fans may have to wait to stream The Stand 2020. In the UK, the series defies its title, and will only be available in 2021 (albeit early, on January 3). Unlike the U.S. and Canada, it will be available through the StarzPlay app.
Australians will have to wait even longer to stream the epic, as the release date down under won’t be until Jan. 15th, 2021. Unlike the U.S., Canada, and the UK, The Stand 2020 will be available through Amazon. One will find the series on Amazon in the U.S., but only as a means to sign up for the CBS All Access extension.
If certain streaming sites haven’t released the title in one’s country, purchasing a VPN is always an option. This way, one can stream The Stand 2020 in a country in which these platforms have not yet released it.
The Stand 2020 premieres in the U.S. on December 17th, and we can lose ourselves in the series week by week via CBS All Access. International release dates follow soon, and there are several ways to watch and find out if it’s duller than the original or puts it to shame.
