Vertigo picks up ‘Final Portrait’ for UK release
Vertigo Films has announced it acquired the rights to distribute Stanley Tucci’s Final Portrait in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The biopic offers a glimpse into the life of Alberto Giacometti. Two years before his death in 1964, Giacometti bumps into American critic James Lord, whom he begs to sit for a portrait. However, the process turns from what was supposed to be a week into months, with no end in sight. Ultimately, Lord comes to see a logic in the artist’s chaotic mind.
Through the film, directed and adapted by Tucci (Blind Date, Joe Gould’s Secret, The Imposters) from James Lord’s memoir A Giacometti Portrait, we are able to enter into the workshop of the Swiss artist and observe the genius at work.
Final Portrait stars Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) and Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) as Giacometti and Lord, respectively. Supporting cast includes Clémence Poésy (In Bruges), Sylvie Testud (Beyond Silence), James Faulkner (Starz’s Da Vinci’s Demons) and Tony Shalhoub (Monk).
The sale of the film was struck by Hanway Films. Riverstone Pictures financed Final Portrait in its entirety and Potboiler Productions and Olive Productions produced.
Final Portrait has been scheduled by Vertigo for release this summer, which will coincide with Tate Modern’s Giacometti exhibition, the first retrospective of his work in the United Kingdom in 20 years.
