Set in 1970-1971, the story follows the life of a family and their two domestic workers through a year in Mexico City. Cleo and Adela take care of the four kids of Antonia and Sofia, along with having boyfriends of their own.

In the course of events, Antonio leaves his family for his mistress and Cleo gets pregnant, after which her boyfriend abandons her. Sofia decides to take the kids on vacation to acquaint them with the reality of their father, and she takes Cleo along to clear her mind.

The movie has drama, emotions, action, and fights, and was inspired by director Alfonso Cuaron’s perception and experiences growing up in the Colonia Roma area of Mexico City. It stars Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira, among other talented actors. Roma has won several accolades and international awards, including 10 Academy Award nominations and three wins.

The movie has been appreciated for Cuaron’s direction and screenplay, the performance of the actors, and the real portrayal of the society and its class distinctions. It became the first Mexican movie to win Best foreign Language Film at the Oscars.

Marriage Story

Marriage Story is based on the divorce of a couple and how it affects their relationship, their son, and their lives. It is based on director Noah Baumbach’s real-life divorce with actress Jennifer Jason Leigh as well as similar experiences of his friends and family members while getting divorced.

The movie shows the very real effects of divorce on a family and how a couple can choose to remain friends through the ordeal. Laura Dern won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Nicole’s lawyer Nora. The movie was also nominated for several Golden Globes and BAFTA.

The Irishman

You can always count on Martin Scorsese to make brilliant movies, and The Irishman is undoubtedly one of his best works. It is based on the 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt.

Frank Sheeran is a truck driver who starts working as a hitman for Philadelphia crime families and eventually becomes the chief bodyguard of Teamster Jimmy Hoffa, a crime boss and head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Hoffa develops a close relationship with Frank, his family, and his daughter Peggy.

As dissension begins to erupt between the crime bosses and they decide to get Hoffa killed, Frank is given the responsibility of performing the dangerous deed. The movie is intertwined with real historical incidents in the US and has Presidents Kennedy and Nixon as part of the plot.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

If drama and crime are making you too tense, you need a nice, romantic teen movie to lift your spirits. And Netflix has a plethora of such offerings, the best of which is To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. The 2018 film is based on a book with the same name by Jenny Han. High school junior Lara Jean Covey is a shy introvert who has never had a boyfriend. Whenever she has had a crush on a guy throughout her life, she has written a letter to him explaining her feelings and locked away the letters in her closet.

When the five letters are mysteriously delivered to the addressees, it makes things awkward as one of them is her schoolmate Peter Kavinsky and another is her elder sister Margot’s boyfriend Josh.

The movie perfectly captures the newfound emotions, love and heartbreak that teenagers go through and how equations at high school affect their life, self-esteem, and personality.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an American Western movie directed and produced by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen. It is an anthology of six short stories set on the American frontier and has the cowboy genre stamped all over it. Starring Tim Blake Nelson, Liam Neeson, James Franco, Tom Waits, Brendan Gleeson, etc, the movie has earned three nominations at the Academy Awards.

The first story is the same as the title, based on Buster Scruggs, a cheerful cowboy who shoots perfectly and sings delightfully. He continues being the best gunman until he is bested by a younger, sharper cowboy. The second story, Near Algodones, is about a young cowboy who is on the run after robbing a bank and is being chased by a lawman’s posse to hang him.

The third snippet is called Meal Ticket and is about an old theater producer who travels from town to town to put up shows with his artist, who has no arms and legs. Their journey takes them to far off towns as the profits keep dwindling.

All Gold Canyon is the fourth one, about a gold prospector who stumbles upon a large gold vein but is being followed by a young gunman who wants all the gold for himself. The fifth story is called The Gal Who Got Rattled and follows Alice and Gilbert as the two siblings travel to Oregon for better life prospects. The last story, The Mortal Remains, is about five vastly different people on a journey together, as they share stories about human experiences and moral dilemmas.
