The BLACKPINK members have gone from watching Netflix to starring in their very own Netflix documentary. The K-pop girl group has grown exponentially over the last couple of years to become the highest-charting female Korean group on Billboard Hot 100 with their latest single “Ice Cream”.
The mountain of accolades attributed to the group includes record-breaking views on two music videos, double platinum on their single “How You Like That”, and the first female group in Forbes’ 30 under 30. The BLACKPINK members have also captured the hearts of millions of fans who follow the four girls religiously.
Now Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rosé are going to be featured in a new documentary, BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky, that will go trace the girls’ journeys from little-known hopefuls to worldwide stars. Check out the details on BLACKPINK’s upcoming documentary.
BLACKPINK, represented by YG Entertainment, was in the making as far back as 2011. It took several years of tryouts & training before YG Entertainment confirmed on May 18, 2016, that they had put together their second girl group, the first being 2NE1.
On June 1, 2016, Jennie was announced as the first of the BLACKPINK members and was followed by Lisa on June 8, Jisoo on June 15, and Rosé on June 22. Instead of the proposed nine members, on June 29, YG Entertainment announced that the four members would complete the band and also revealed their name as BLACKPINK.
The meaning of the band’s name is that “pretty isn’t everything”. BLACKPINK’s debut was on August 8, 2016.
BLACKPINK was a highly anticipated band as YG Entertainment had not produced a girl group in over seven years. The band’s dynamic saw the four members complement each other well and blend together dancing, singing, and rapping in seamless rhythm.
From their debut in 2016, BLACKPINK established itself as one of the most popular groups in South Korea topping the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart with tracks from their first album, “Boombayah” and “Whistle”. Their success continued as they made their debuts in Japan & America.
An iconic moment for BLACKPINK was its 2019 performance at the Coachella Festival. Coachella is one of the hottest venues for performers and has featured the likes of Beyonce, Kanye West, and Billie Eilish. BLACKPINK made history as the first female K-pop group to perform at the festival.
Overcoming the 2020 curse
2020 has proved to be another massive year for BLACKPINK, despite the tumultuous times. The group was featured on superstar Lady Gaga’s sixth album Chromatica, on the track “Sour Candy”. The song rose to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving BLACKPINK its first top 40 hit.
BLACKPINK’s new album, simply titled The Album, is set to be released on October 2 and the band has already debuted their two singles “How You Like That” & “Ice Cream” with massive success.
