Premium cable: The best sex scenes in all of HBO’s TV shows

There are different levels of the television experience in terms of sex scenes. There’s what you can show on broadcast television vs basic cable vs premium cable vs streaming. Depending on where your show is going and even what time it’s airing at, the rules change on what you can show in terms of sex scenes.

That’s a whole long conversation for another article. Basically, in terms of premium cable channels such as HBO and streaming services such as Netflix, you can get the most bang for your buck in terms of sex scenes, so to speak. But what are the very best sex scenes on HBO? Well here are just a couple of our personal favorites.

The Leftovers — “Solace for Tired Feet”

HBO’s The Leftovers is one of the most emotional and rich series to have come out of the network. This season one sex scene between Kevin (Justin Theroux) and Nora (Carrie Coon) showcased why their stop-start romance was so great to watch unfold. Part of the reason is because of how important the scene was to their character development.

The sex scene is Kevin and Nora’s both giving permission to themselves to care about someone for the first time in years. More importantly, it allows them to move past their grief or take that first step. So the emotional richness of this moment also hypes up the sexiness of the scene.

Westworld — “The Well-Tempered Clavier”

It should be unsurprising that Thandie Newton’s Westworld madam Maeve ended up on a list of HBO sex scenes. And it is. But this one from early in season one of the sci-fi series really is the chef’s kiss. In the scene, Maeve wakes up fellow host Hector (Rodrigo Santoro) to the nature of their reality.

In a truly baller move, they set the room on fire and literally have sex to the death. That’s wild and hot, literally hot. The sheer raw passion is absolutely fun and puts another twist into Westworld’s meditation on the nature of reality and personhood. Because no one who has sex that passionate can’t be fake, you feel us?

 The Sopranos — “Christopher”

When you think of HBO Original Programming, chances are one of the first series titles that’ll pop up in your brain is The Sopranos. At the core of the series, it’s all about power dynamics from scene to scene over the course of the series. One of the best examples of this sort of ethos of The Sopranos takes place in season four. For the time, the episode was released in 2002, it was boundary pushing.

There was BDSM, sex toys, and frank dirty talk that probably shocked a lot of people at the time. At the center of it was Janice (Aida Turturro) and Ralph (Joe Pantoliano), it invokes the social climbing and ever-shifting emotional dynamics at the core of the series.

Games of Thrones — “Kissed by Fire”

Games of Thrones has had a lot of backlash for how the sex scenes within the series was depicted. A lot of it has been well-deserved. In some moments, however, Games of Thrones has given us some very tender moments in the darkness of the series. This one takes place between Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Ygritte (Rose Leslie) in season? It’s pretty amazing and hot.

In this dark and cold cave in the middle of nowhere, the pair discard societal notions that have held them back in order to find their humanity and the passion within themselves. The sex scene is also a great culmination of the tension that had been building between the pair as well.
