Let Him Go Full Movie is an upcoming American drama film produced, written and directed by Thomas Bezucha, based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Larry Watson. It stars Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and Lesley Manville. Following the loss of their son, a retired sheriff and his wife leave their Montana ranch to rescue their young grandson from the clutches of a dangerous family living off the grid in the Dakotas.

Let Him Go, in select theaters this past weekend from Focus Features, is an odd one. The producers clearly saw Kevin Costner and Diane Lane playing Ma and Pa Kent in those Superman movies and thought Costner/Lane as a married couple from the great plains was worth another 90 minutes or so. I can’t say I blame them, Costner/Lane do make effective avatars of homespun Americana, effortlessly evoking prairie populism and moral rectitude with one wizened squint towards the horizon, like Diane Arbus shooting a Viagra ad.

Which is to say: Let Him Go is strong on people and place. Costner and Lane play George and Margaret Blackledge, living on a farm in sixties Montana with their son, stepdaughter, and grandson, hooking us with setting. But soon as the story kicks in, it sort of falls apart.

Let Him Go, adapted by director Thomas Bezucha from a Larry Watson novel, is a bit of a tweener, unable to find a balance between realism and genre pulp, playing like a weird mishmash of Yellowstone, Taken, and Tyler Perry. It comes off as not quite exciting enough for genre movies and not quite believable enough for cinema.

Thanks to the toxicity of the coronavirus pandemic that has altered the world as we used to know it, I doubt if anyone can seriously challenge the conviction that 2020 will go down in the books as the worst year in the history of the arts. Movies are on life support. To see one, you have to own a car and find a drive-in theater, or sit in a straight-back chair for hours glued to a laptop computer staring at a screen the size of a small kitchen chopping board.

Needless to say, I haven’t seen much. Nor have I missed much. If there is such a thing as a storage room for low-budget thrillers without thrills populated by actors nobody ever heard of, or idiot comedies guaranteed to wreak havoc on your I.Q. points faster than you adjust your face mask in order to breathe, then the doors are suddenly wide open. At last we know the true meaning of cinematic despair.

There was a time when the name “Kevin Costner” on a marquee was a guarantee of a major box office haul. Costner, whose good looks overcame his limited range during the early stages of his career, starred in one major hit after another until The Postman didn’t deliver and Waterworld sank. Now, three decades past his prime, Costner is having a nice little renaissance after re-inventing and repackaging himself as more of a character actor than an idol.

No longer a major draw but still a recognizable name, Costner signed on to play Pa Kent in Man of Steel opposite Diane Lane’s Ma. Despite limited screen time, the two evinced enough chemistry that people took notice. One of those people was Thomas Bezucha, who decided to bring the two on board as an older married couple in his adaptation of Larry Watson’s Let Him Go. Casting turns out to be the best thing Bezucha could have done for this uneven screenplay.

The pair makes Let Him Go worthwhile even when the storyline is poised to let us down.

The movie is a ‘60s-era (1960s, that is) thriller with a Western flair. The second half, when the thriller elements kick into high gear, is considerably better than the dour, meandering first half (a road trip without a discernible end point).

Things liven up considerably once Lesley Manville makes her unforgettable entrance in the full light of a chandelier and immediately starts gobbling up any scenery that isn’t tied down. It can’t be a coincidence that her character is named Blanche.
