Just starting ‘Money Heist’? Catch up for season 5 with our series recap

If you’re looking to shake up your Netflix-watching with something a little more explosive, Money Heist is the show for you. This action-packed Spanish crime drama has been renewed by Netflix for a fifth season.

If you’re looking for a recap to bring you up to speed, you’re in the right place. In the first four seasons we see a team of top-tier thieves organized to steal from the Royal Mint of Spain, but the plan slowly starts to unravel.

What happens in Money Heist season 1?

Spoiler alert!

Money Heist begins in the middle, as we see a woman named Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) being saved by a man called the Professor (Álvaro Morte). The plot to rob the Royal Mint of Spain is explained, and we’re introduced to the team: Moscow (Paco Tous), Berlin (Pedro Alonso), Nairobi (Alba Flores), Rio (Miguel Herran), Denver (Jaime Lorente), Helsinki (Darko Peric), and Oslo (Roberto Garcia Ruiz).

After this introduction, we’re thrust into the middle of a large-scale assault of the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid. The team has taken sixty-seven hostages and fired up the money printer to run 24/7. Over the span of nine Money Heist episodes, personal relationships have developed between hostage-takers, hostages, and even the hostage negotiator, potentially compromising the whole plan.

What happens in Money Heist season 2?

In Money Heist season 2, the Professor starts to lose control of the situation and the first robber is captured by police. The team resorts to a PR blitz, but plans are hatched by the thieves to try to escape from the mint with their freshly printed euros. Oslo, Moscow, and Berlin die in their efforts to escape, but by the end of the season the rest of the team have left the Royal Mint of Spain with a cool €984 million.

What happens in Money Heist season 3?

With the currency safely out of the Royal Mint of Spain, season three of Money Heist has a much more laid-back opening. After Tokyo calls Rio on a satellite phone, the police track Rio down to an island and arrest him. Tokyo asks the Professor for help in locating Rio, and they hatch yet another plan for a heist. This time, with the help of the Professor’s brother, they rob the Bank of Spain of all their gold reserves.

One of the negotiators, Raquel Murillo, discovers that the man she’s been falling for is actually the Professor. After a confrontation, she agrees to help the Professor and is given the code name Lisbon.

The plan to free Rio and rob the Bank of Spain quickly unravels. Rio is released from custody, but after realizing that he’s not an equal partner to Tokyo he breaks up with her. Tokyo is still in the Bank of Spain when the news hits and this devastating development leads her to drink and act recklessly, while the cops take aim at the thieves with snipers.

What happens in Money Heist season 4?

The team is devastated as Money Heist season 4 begins with the mourning of Nairobi, who’s been shot down by a sniper. Tokyo performs a successful surgery on Nairobi, then begins to hatch a plan for the team to escape. Tokyo’s plan fails and informants strike deals with the authorities as Nairobi is taken hostage.

The Professor hatches a plan to save his team with the help of new recruit Palermo. The final episode of Money Heist season 4 ends with the Professor and some others attempting to free Lisbon, who’s stuck in a police tent outside the Bank of Spain. Lisbon is freed, but we find an intelligence officer inside the Professor’s hideout with a gun to his head.

With the last season of Money Heist leaving us on the edge of our seats, season 5 can’t come soon enough. Though we’re not exactly sure how the Professor will get out of this one, we do know there’ll be plenty of action to keep us watching this deliciously addictive nail-biter.
