Want to watch ‘Tenet’ tonight? Stream the movie online for free
Movie theaters have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. With people wary of going to them and many theaters still closed, it’s challenging to see a new release on the big screen. This year, many films didn’t get to premiere when they were supposed to.
Releases from 2020 were often pushed back to later dates because of the unforeseen circumstances brought on by the pandemic. One of the films affected was Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.
Tenet was originally going to be released on July 17 of this year. Plans changed and it was rescheduled for release on July 31. It was pushed back again and finally premiered in select U.S. theaters on August 31. It was released in many countries outside the U.S.first, and finally made a big debut in all U.S. theaters on September 3.
A different experience
Director Christopher Nolan explained why he believes watching films like Tenet on a small screen isn’t as powerful of an experience as watching it in the theater:
“The reason I don’t [put them in that form] is because it’s put into these big theaters as its primary form, or its initial distribution. And the experience trickles down, to the extent where, if you have an iPad and you’re watching a movie, you carry with you the knowledge and your understanding of what that cinematic experience would be and you extrapolate that.”
But going to a movie theater for that experience isn’t an option for everyone right now. Because of COVID-19, many people have turned to streaming versus going to a theater.
Is Tenet still at the movies?
Tenet is still playing in theaters, but it’s likely that many people who want to watch it still haven’t seen it. Its physical & digital versions won’t be available until December 15, though preorder is available now.
Once it’s released digitally, it will be available to stream online. Services like Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, YouTube and Apple will have the movie available for purchase for $19.99. The Blu-ray will cost $35.99, the DVD will cost $28.98 and the 4k UHD combo pack option will cost $44.95.
All of these options cost money, and paying to stream a movie might not always be an option. For those who already subscribe to streaming services, Tenet might eventually be on streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, but it’s not clear if or when that would happen.
The film is also from Warner Bros., which is owned by WarnerMedia. WarnerMedia is also part of HBO. For those with an HBO Max subscription, this means Tenet might be available for streaming on HBO Max.
