Sex can be an important storytelling tool. Here are some of the best sex scenes that appeared on television prior to COVID-19.

All the best TV sex scenes: Proof we’ll be missing out thanks to COVID-19

When we think of all the ways COVID-19 has changed our life, one thing stands out: physical distancing & its repercussions on our interactions. People are talking about how much they miss hugging their pals, skin hunger is becoming very evident, and scientists are warning about the psychological impact of touch starvation.

These physical distancing requirements also mean another thing: sex scenes will never look the same on our television screens. Some shoots are trying to be innovative at this – using technology to recreate a virtual sex scene, but it ain’t the real deal.

With that longing in our hearts, here’s a round-up of some of the best sex scenes we’ve seen on television lately, ones that make us feel like we’ll be missing out on the art in upcoming TV shows & movies.

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones has given us some of the steamiest sex scenes of all time. The HBO series also managed to leave a mark, despite its rather disappointing finale. One sex scene that we’d like to give a special mention to is the Daenerys Targaryen scene with Khal Drogo on their wedding night.

This particular scene has come under a lot of debate, considering the blurred boundaries of consent, but Daenerys was with a woman just moments prior.

Sex and the City

There’s nothing like going to the classics and finding a scene that’s equal parts fun & raunchy. Sarah-Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon initiated a number of hook-ups, make out sessions, and one-night stands during their time on the beloved HBO show Sex and the City.

Among our favorite sex scenes from Sex and the City, most of which feature Kim Cattrall’s character Samantha, one stands out. It takes place in the 18th episode of the second season, when Sam met a man who is too large for her to handle – if you know what we mean – but since Sam loves a good challenge, she wasn’t going to let that stop her.

Her solace? She found some comfort in smoking weed to help her enjoy the literal ride. Spoiler: it didn’t end as well.

Sex Education

One of the finest offerings from Netflix, Sex Education doesn’t sugarcoat the messiness of sex. Another reason to love the show is the diversity of sexual experiences portrayed across characters.

The one that caught our attention more than the others is Olivia’s scene with Malek where they got hot to the beats of Indian classical music. There’s a lot to uncover in the scene – including how conscious Olivia was of her orgasm face.

There’s something inherently sexy about Scottish ruggedness, but the true treat of this series comes to us with Claire & Jamie’s first time after their wedding. Both of them help the other undress. There’s a lot of tension & build-up but that only adds to the heat of the moment.

Grey’s Anatomy

For a show that has been running for 17 seasons, Grey’s Anatomy has a lot of options to choose from. But for those who’ve watched the show since its early days know that nothing compares to the prom sex scene between Meredith Grey & Derek Shepherd. They just don’t shoot scenes like that anymore. We’re, of course, choosing to overlook the infidelity bit.

Normal People

Connell and Marianne’s relationship is a complex & complicated one. Normal People does more than just spotlight the ups & downs of their relationship – it also shows them growing as individuals with distinct interests, talent, and choices. But at the end of the day, they’re each other’s first loves.

It was messy, magnetic, and magnificent when it could be. The show has quite  few graphic sex scenes – from Marianne’s brief tryst with BDSM in her relationship with Jamie, to her romp with Connell in the season finale. By that time, they had developed personalities that weren’t insufferable. More importantly, the impending loss that comes with love added to the heat.
